Description

In the year marking 150 years since the birth of Franz Lehár, the Opera and Theater Madlenianum is presenting his most famous operetta, Merry Widow. The last time Merry Widow was performed in Belgrade was in 1979, and before that in 1965. The comedic story of the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari and her countrymen's attempts to find her a new husband, one that will keep her inherited fortune in the principality of Montenegro, has been a favorite worldwide. In the first 60 years of performance, it was staged around 500,000 times. No other show or musical enjoyed such international commercial success until the 1960s like Merry Widow. This is why it's often called the queen of operetta! While keeping the charm of the original story, we have created a version that further plays with contemporary dynamics of theatrical storytelling, introduces new scenes, enhances the cabaret atmosphere, and at the same time keeps the piece suitable for all generations hungry for laughter, good music, and dance.
