Description

Mudhoney is one of those bands whose biography should be known in order to better understand the context of an era. The founders of the band Mark Arm and Steve Turner began their, so to speak, musical journey in the suburbs of Seattle in 1978 with the 'worst band ever,' as they were introduced on local radio, and gave the name Mr. Epp and the Calculations after a high school math teacher.

Truth be told, the beginnings were more of a joke than a real band, so they had their first real performance three years later – the guys actually didn't really know how to play. And this brings us to one of those general, pop-cultural moments when it comes to Mudhoney – Mark Arm, describing his then band, first used the word grunge: 'I hate Mr. Epp and the Calculations! Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!'. He soon enters a somewhat more serious phase with Turner, and in 1984 they found the cult band Green River, whose first EP 'Come on Down' is considered the first grunge release at all. Interestingly, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, who would later form Pearl Jam, were part of the band at that time. Although Arm and Turner parted ways at this stage due to disagreements on how Green River should sound, they reunite at the end of 1987, and that's when Mudhoney finally emerges, named after the eponymous film by the distinctive American director Russ Meyer. Matt Lukin, who had just left the cult Melvins, joins them on bass. They soon release their debut EP 'Superfuzz Bigmuff' for the legendary label Sub Pop, one of Kurt Cobain's favorite albums. The band's first single 'Touch Me I'm Sick' quickly gained visibility and popularity in the U.S. Sonic Youth soon invited them on a tour of the UK, while in 1989 they released their first album 'Mudhoney'. Since then, they have released 10 more official releases and solidified their cult status on a global level. Alongside Arm and Turner, one of the founding members, drummer Dan Peters, remains in the band, while Guy Maddison from Australia has been on bass since 2001.

The second Mudhoney concert in Belgrade simply cannot be missed, see you on September 17th at Dorćol Platz!
