TRIPTIHON FOR EURYDICE choreo-drama based on Branko Miljković's work. 50 minutes. Orpheus, son of Thracian king Oeagrus, mythical singer, musician, and poet. Apollo granted him a lyre with seven strings. While Orpheus sang, flocks of birds circled above his head. Fish leaped out of the sea. Rivers halted their flow. Rocks trembled. Trees drew near to shade him from the sun. All animals gathered at his feet. Shortly after marrying the beautiful nymph Eurydice, she was bitten by a venomous snake. Orpheus could not bear her death, so he descended into the underworld to bring her back to life. His lyre conquered the forces of death and the darkness of the world of the dead. The Furies wept, Cerberus remained gentle, Charon stopped his boat, Ixion's wheel ceased to spin, Sisyphus sat on a stone, Tantalus forgot about hunger and thirst, and Orpheus's song softened the stern judges, making the already finished thread of Eurydice's life begin to spin once again. The rulers of the underworld allowed Orpheus to lead Eurydice out of Hades, but on the condition that he not look back until they both reached the light of day. Eurydice followed the sounds of his lyre, but plagued by doubt and longing, the divine singer turned around to see her, and in that moment, he lost his beloved wife for a second time, forever.
