EMIGRANTS by Slavomir Mrožek
In the New Year's night, two men: emigrants or immigrants, prisoners or asylum seekers, refugees or vagabonds. It doesn't matter. Both there and here, with them and with us, then and now. Everywhere is the same: as Jean-Paul Sartre would say – HELL IS OTHERS. Is there a way out? If existence precedes essence, then there is no way out for Assange, nor for Mrožek's sad clowns. If essence ever surpasses existence, we will be able to, at least on a symbolic level, somehow reluctantly accept the misery and poverty of human destiny in the dialectical struggle of freedom and necessity.
