As I listen to Mt Fog, I recall Thoreau's "Walden," then stories about ghosts, and a couple of horror films inspired by folk beliefs, probably due to the themes that Carolyn B. has been occupied with on the albums "Guide to the Unusual" (2021), "Spells of Silence" (2022), and "ultraviolet heart machine" (2024). On the other hand, musical associations are lining up, and I think how this band sounds like a successful synthesis of Björk and Cocteau Twins, or Kate Bush and The Knife. The DIY approach to production gives a particularly organic quality to the music signed by Carolyn B, making it original, unique, transformative, and contemporary. This American singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer became Mt Fog in 2019 while living a solitary life in a house without the internet. She describes her childhood as Victorian in a musically gifted family, spending it playing the violin, but later, at the very beginning of her studies, she realized that her view of music differed from the strictly formal, academic one. It was then that she began to explore the voice as an instrument, soon joining a choir that performed Balkan women's traditional music. A departure from the rules of classical music, as well as experimenting with creating loops on her sister's old synthesizer, opened her path to writing her own compositions. Carolyn B. defines the sound of Mt Fog as forest folktronica, and that is indeed the best genre description. Her voice dominates over simple melodies and sounds ethereal, magical, at times haunting, vulnerable, yet powerful, as if it belongs to the forest, the ocean, the earth. Carolyn B. has shared the stage with artists such as Anika and Tim Hecker, and she had a notable performance at KEXP. Bandcamp Daily selected her album "Spells of Silence" as album of the day, and the "Seattle Times" declared it album of the year. In March 2023, Mt Fog performed for the first time as a trio, with Andy Sells (Afrocop, Select Level, FCS North) on drums, and Casie Rosebridge (Swanderer, Crazy Eyes) on bass guitar. This incarnation of the band is soon heading on a European tour, arriving at KC Grad in Belgrade on December 4. "And if you find me, I'll be singing." The evening will be opened by Blaaž (блааӁъ), a psychedelic rock band from Saint Petersburg, currently living and creating in Belgrade. They found inspiration in the New York scene of the seventies, the British noise sound of the nineties, and outsider cinematography.
