Reading of the play *Thank God*

What if you love someone, but they don’t love you back?

On April 9, we invite you to a reading of Zhenya Ivashchenko’s play Thank God—a story that begins as an ancient text but unexpectedly turns out to be about us.

It is based on the apocryphal “Acts of Paul and Thecla” (2nd century): a young girl whose life is already predetermined must follow patriarchal traditions, while society and her family expect her to make a successful marriage. But suddenly, love intervenes. And that is only the beginning of the story.

1st century CE: preachers, executions, miracles, flight. But behind this lies a painfully familiar story: about addiction, unrequited love, choosing oneself, and the fact that people hardly ever change. The heroes of the 1st century feel, doubt, and speak almost exactly as we do today.

🗣After the reading, there will be a discussion with the author and sexologist Zhenya Ivashchenko. We’ll talk about unrequited love, why it’s so hard to let go, and whether it’s truly possible to be happy without a “response.”
