Karaganda. Frost, coal dust on the snow, the outskirts where snowdrifts stay until April. The man who was found by the garages was neither searched for nor mourned: they looked, sighed, and filed the paperwork.
And then the expert spoke one sentence — and a case expected to take half an hour stopped being that, because the morgue had been late for this man by more than a year.
All the while the city kept living: changing signs, burying people, raising toasts, settling debts. And in each of those fifteen winters someone in it knew something the others did not.
