Film Club with Егор Сенников: watching and discussing the film «Людоед» / Ravenous (Antonia Bird, USA — United Kingdom, 1999, 101 minutes)
About the film
- After a rather questionable military exploit, U.S. Army Captain John Boyd is sent to serve at a remote garrison in the mountains of California. There he meets a handful of soldiers, and soon a gaunt stranger appears in the camp. He recounts how a group of settlers got lost in the mountains, ran out of food and gradually discovered an unexpected source of sustenance. The soldiers set out on a rescue mission — and that’s when the most terrifying things begin.
"Ravenous" is a strange film in which a western is crossed with gory horror, dark comedy and a very sharp political satire. Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle play out a gruesome story to the brisk, even cheerful music of Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn from Blur. Director Antonia Bird turns the tale of a backwater garrison into an allegory of American history and reflects on the insatiable thirst for power. In 1999 critics weren’t quite sure what to do with such a film, but over the years "Ravenous" has gained cult status.
Warning in advance: "Ravenous" contains some gore — blood, severed limbs and other unpleasant details. But don’t be frightened prematurely: it’s a funny, inventive and utterly unpredictable film that constantly shifts genre and tone.
After the screening, of course, we’ll talk about why one of the most unusual horrors of the 1990s also turned out to be a film about the structure of American society.
