About the film

After a heart attack, carpenter Daniel Blake is forbidden by doctors to work — but a government panel decides he can work after all and strips him of his benefits. To challenge the decision, Daniel must navigate a whole labyrinth of bureaucratic obstacles and barriers. Along the way he meets single mother Katie and her children — people whom the system forces to go through degrading procedures and then blames for not fitting its expectations.

Ken Loach makes social cinema as a simple, funny, and increasingly unbearable story about human dignity. "I, Daniel Blake" brought him his second Palme d'Or — the first was for "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." More important than the awards is how Loach turns the most mundane things into genuine suspense: a person is slowly destroyed by a tediously bureaucratic process.
