Lecture: Machine Learning in Science — AlphaMissense and NEO AID
Description
My colleague in science outreach Masha (a bioinformatician and a real researcher, unlike me) and I want to talk about two topical applications of ML (Machine Learning) in science:
AlphaMissense — a new neural network from DeepMind, continuing the ideas of AlphaFold. It addresses the important task of predicting pathologies caused by mutations in proteins
NEO AID — a neural network created for the Planetary Defense Coordination Office that recognizes NEO-class asteroids (Near-Earth Objects) and assesses their level of danger to Earth
+ as a bonus, briefly about drone control on Mars
In the lecture we will cover:
How a gene determines a protein's structure, and how a protein's structure can become dangerous to health
Why predicting pathogenic mutations is an important task that could become the next breakthrough in biotech
What applications of the new model are already possible
Which asteroids are considered dangerous to Earth and why they are difficult to track using conventional methods
How neural networks not only solve this problem but also expand what's possible for engineers and humanity
As a bonus we'll discuss why flying a drone on Mars is not the same as flying on Earth, and why neural networks are currently indispensable
Come on Tuesday, July 21 at 19:30 at Sreda Obitaniya
