Myths About Digital Detox: What Science Really Knows About 'Clip Thinking'
Description
MYTHS ABOUT DIGITAL DETOX: WHAT SCIENCE REALLY KNOWS ABOUT 'CLIP THINKING'
We've all heard about digital detoxes, the benefits of reading for the brain, and the need to sometimes opt for an analog life. But if we've tried to limit social media and then returned to it, the question arises: is it really just a lack of willpower? Or are the interactions between technology and the human mind far more complex than the clickbait articles about "how to beat social media addiction" suggest?
In this lecture we'll discuss how technological progress affects the human brain and attention, what science actually knows about so-called clip thinking, and whether a digital detox helps develop concentration. Based on the latest Russian and British research, we'll debunk popular myths about the internet and the brain and explain why reading alone is not enough to "protect" thinking from the digital environment. We'll also talk specifically about children and adolescents: what happens to their development amid constant interaction with technology and what parents can realistically do.
