The 1980s in Music

The 1980s are remembered for the further development of pop and dance music; classic rock still enjoyed great popularity, helped by the emergence of new wave, soft rock and glam metal sounds. The decade was also marked by the increased use of synthesizers and new electronic instruments, which led to the rise of synth-pop. These years saw the birth of new genres such as electro, techno, freestyle and eurodance, which would reach their peak in the 1990s. By the end of the decade, so-called urban genres like R&B, hip hop and rap became increasingly popular, and their success continued into the following two decades.
