The Eighth Offensive
Branko Ćopić introduced this term to Yugoslav literature, naming his novel from 1950. Unlike the first seven enemy offensives in the People's Liberation Struggle, which were experienced by the Krajina warriors, Partisans, this eighth one was not military. The heroes of the novel, after the victory, start their lives far away from their homeland, the Una River, and the Grmeč Mountain – in the flatlands of Vojvodina or in the city, among tall buildings. After the war and heroic deeds, one of them is still haunted by the persecution of Chetnik bands, and the others are in eternal struggle with themselves and longing for their homeland. The story of this Eighth Offensive takes place in the spring of 1999, in a Vojvodina village. In the tavern known as 'Promaja,' an Austro-Hungarian house 'with elbows,' with a wonderful garden 'found only in Vojvodina,' 'two (un) reconcilable worlds' live and work – Krajina people and Vojvodina residents. Some came after World War II as victors, some fled from the civil war in Bosnia, and some have spent their entire lives there. This is a simple story about simple love, simple life, about the sun in people and human joy. Vanja Vodeničarević
