Screening of The Fly and discussion with Daniil Chernenko
Description
Cronenberg's revolution in body-horror: "The Fly"
A scientist, a teleporter, a fly that accidentally gets into it and an irreversible mutation. Even if you haven't seen The Fly, this plot is probably familiar to you — one of the most influential in horror cinema. Director David Cronenberg permanently changed the idea of how film can treat the human body — and the echo of his discoveries can be heard in the success of District 9 and Substance.
But what, exactly, is Cronenberg's revolution? What is the philosophy of body-horror — that unsettling and until recently rather niche genre? And what "dark" (and useful) truths about ourselves will we understand if we try to take the fly's side in this story?
Come to be frightened, to laugh, to cry, and to unpack why, 40 years on, The Fly has only become more relevant and reads like a contemporary diagnosis of our body and consciousness.
Discussion
The discussion will be led by Daniil Chernenko, a film critic and cultural researcher, author of the Telegram channel t.me/cinefiles_txt, and a contributor to the magazines Pravila Zhizni ("Rules of Life") and Nozh ("Knife").
