Screening and discussion of the film Erotikon (1929)
Description
SCREENING AND DISCUSSION OF THE FILM «EROTIKON» (1929)
What today seems almost an innocent melodrama, nearly a century ago became one of the most talked-about films in Europe.
Erotikon by Czechoslovak director Gustav Machatý caused a major scandal and genuine audience frenzy upon its release. The film openly addressed female desire, freedom of choice and the consequences of love — themes that sounded incredibly bold for the late 1920s.
The lead role was played by Ita Rina — the winner of the first-ever 'Miss Yugoslavia' contest (1926). After the Paris premiere, enthusiastic viewers literally carried the actress out of the cinema in their arms.
After the screening we'll discuss borrowings from Pushkin's The Stationmaster in the plot, the famous Russian montage — and, of course, how women of the time perceived ideas of female freedom.
