McDonald's made a computer mouse shaped like fries

More than 60% of its shell comes from recycled Happy Meal toys. Only 4,000 were made, sold only in China - and far more people wanted one.

McDonald's made a computer mouse shaped like fries

Here's one for the "don't need it, still want it" list: McDonald's in China has released a computer mouse shaped like a carton of fries. The bottom is the red carton with the logo, the top is a bunch of fries - those are the buttons, with the scroll wheel in between.

Even the name is a joke. In Chinese, "mouse" is 鼠标 (shǔbiāo), and McDonald's swapped the first character for 薯 - "potato". Same sound, different character.

What it's made of

More than 60% of the plastic in the shell comes from old Happy Meal toys, which are collected, taken apart and turned into new material. The mouse is part of a recycling program McDonald's China launched this summer together with Lenovo. The same toys have already been turned into trays, flowerpots, plush toys and staff uniforms.

What it can do

It's not just a shelf ornament - you can actually work with it:

  • three sensitivity (DPI) settings
  • quiet buttons
  • Bluetooth or a 2.4 GHz receiver
  • a 380 mAh battery

It comes with a felt pouch that unfolds into a mouse pad shaped like a green McDonald's tray.

Price and where to get it

The price is almost symbolic: 99 yuan (about $14) plus 18 McDonald's loyalty points. The catch: only 4,000 sets were made. They went on sale on October 22 and 23, 2,000 a day, through the McDonald's China app and a WeChat mini program, with a limit of two per person. More than 6,000 people signed up before sales even opened.

So if you've already placed the order in your head, you're probably too late. There's no word yet on sales outside China.

Would you get one?

Would you actually work with it, or would it go straight on the shelf as a collectible? 🍟 Tell us in the comments.
