About the Film

The film "Mačuka" is a powerful anti-war and anti-dictatorship tale that critically sheds light on the violent social and political divisions that led to the military coup in Chile in 1973. Through the perspective of two twelve-year-old boys from opposite ends of the social spectrum, the film follows the emergence and rupture of friendship in a time of deep political turmoil.

Gonzalo Infante, a boy from a privileged, European family, and Pedro Mačuka, a poor boy of indigenous descent, manage to build closeness despite class and identity differences. However, as political violence intensifies, their friendship is put to the test, and innocence is sacrificed in favor of imposed, antagonistic identities.

The film screening provides a space for reflection on solidarity, class divisions, and the destructive power of authoritarian regimes – themes that remain painfully relevant today.

About the Anti-War Film Series

The Anti-War Film Series is organized by the Youth Center CK13 with the aim of informing and educating about war events and severe human rights violations worldwide, using film as a powerful medium and advocacy tool. The film invites us to experience and understand it as if it were about us – to recognize our own vulnerability, responsibility, and call to solidarity in the stories of others.

Through the film's ability to bring us closer to what is unimaginable in reality, to bridge temporal and spatial distance and confront us with the reality of war, a space is opened for us to see more clearly our own war-torn past and the legacy of war crimes. It is precisely this power to bring us close to what is distant and unimaginable that helps us understand how important it is to reject war and recognize our role in building a fairer society.
