"Inner Lights" (Pozorište PATOS, Smederevo)

Duration: 60 minutes

Can we experience theatre without sight? The unusual concept of “Inner Lights” takes vision out of the equation, inviting the audience to “watch” with every other sense. Everyone in the audience wears a blindfold, levelling the field and placing us in the position of blind and low-vision people.
As a medium, theatre relies heavily on all our senses. Through them, the spectator receives different signals from the stage, while the actors work to create emotions that bridge the gap between the imaginary world onstage and the “safe” distance of the audience seats. “Inner Lights” breaks several conventions. The observer becomes part of the scene—an active participant in everything unfolding. The observer becomes the lead in a performance happening around them and “just” for them. Another key theatre dogma also falls: the spectator uses every sense but one—sight. “Inner Lights” turns this “handicap” into an advantage, inviting the audience to take in the show through every other sense. This highly interactive piece is signed by Vladislav Nešić, whose work with blind people led to material that became an experimental journey on stage.
