BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF AGING
Aging is inevitable. But why does our body begin to 'malfunction' at all? Can these mechanisms be blocked, or is aging the unavoidable price of a complex life?
In the lecture we'll look inside the cell and examine how the biological mechanisms of aging work at the molecular level. We'll talk about telomeres and cellular senescence, the accumulation of mutations and damage, and why at some point a cell stops dividing. But the human organism is far from the only possible scenario: we'll look at how aging works in other animals — from 'immortal' jellyfish to naked mole-rats — and try to understand why some organisms age very differently from us.
Most importantly — we'll sort out where science fiction ends and modern science begins: which methods of slowing down or extending life are already being studied in laboratories, which of these actually work, and how far it's currently possible to go in attempts to trick the biological clock.
