Miracle at Šargan

Yugoslav Drama Theatre

A cult play by Ljubomir Simović, first staged in 1974 under the direction of Mira Trailović, explores themes of cruelty and suffering, as well as the deeply ingrained belief in the inevitability of suffering. The group of morally compromised characters gathered at the tavern 'Šargan', lost on the periphery of both the city and the world, is woven by Simović into a dense network stretched between the past and the future. The drama offers us the opportunity to understand the causes of cruelty, and to question whether the vicious cycle of suffering and the need to inflict it on others can be broken.
