DISCUSSION CLUB ON PHOTOGRAPHY 'FETISH'

MEETING TOPIC: BEAUTY

What makes an image beautiful? Does beauty exist on its own, or is it always dependent on culture, habit and the viewer's gaze? Why does photography strive for the beautiful — and what happens when beauty becomes an obsessive idea?

The summer cycle of 'Fetish' meetings consisted of five distinct "blows to the photographer's ego." We discussed originality, authorship, perception, context, archives, and how a photograph's meaning changes depending on who is looking at it and where.

All these conversations had one goal: to try to see photography beyond its usual assumptions and to reflect on what we ourselves want to say with it.

At the next meeting we will talk about beauty — one of the most obvious and at the same time most complex concepts in photography.

After the discussion we will watch the cult film "Peeping Tom" (1960) by Michael Powell — the story of a psychopath who films his victims at the moment of murder. The film explores the relationship between the camera, the gaze, violence and sexual fantasy, and raises questions about the boundary between observation and intrusion, art and obsession.

Moderator

Yuri Orlov — cinematographer and documentary director, author of four films, working in both fiction and documentary cinema. Since 2022 he has lived and worked in Belgrade.
