Nikolija Stanojević: Just Girly Things

#Justgirlythings originated as a hashtag on Tumblr and other social media platforms, consisting of relatable and cheerful images or quotes that encompass the “stereotypical” aspects of girls' lives. It typically includes scenarios such as enjoying coffee, shopping, or expressing emotions, aiming to create a sense of connection among the audience.

#Justgirlythings is a part of the series of works “Private Zone” that I am currently working on. Specifically through these works, my goal is to explore authentic aspects of these supposedly inappropriate moments that girls mostly keep to themselves. Contrary to the idealized version portrayed through social media and in everyday life (what is acceptable and what is not), these works strive to challenge those stereotypes. Activities like picking one's nose or popping pimples, considered “indecent” when shared publicly, are actually universal and satisfying.

The series aims to break free from social norms, something that a girl should not show because it is not considered “proper” or “ladylike.” By revealing these private yet collectively shared moments, I hope to promote a more open and affirmative view of what it truly means to be a girl, enabling an honest way of looking at that topic. What are “just girly things” really.
