The Matilda Effect: Why Are There So Few Women's Names in Science?

As early as 1883 Matilda Joslyn Gage wrote: it is not a lack of talent — but that women's discoveries are simply not recognized. She cited examples of inventions that were attributed to men. A hundred years later historian of science Margaret Rossiter called this phenomenon the Matilda effect.

In the lecture, psychologist Veronika Sorin will talk about those whose discoveries changed science but whose names remained in the shadows. People decided not to speak about them, to ignore them, or simply to claim their discoveries as their own.

We will talk about 5 women — 5 stories about sleep, DNA, serotonin, genetics, and immortal cells.
