Statistics and Problems of Food Waste
- Around 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted each year, which is a third of the total global production
- 800 million people, or one in ten individuals worldwide, suffer from hunger, malnutrition, or lack of secure nutrition
Problems of Food Waste
-
Ecological:
- Part of a broader mechanism of excessive and irresponsible use of our planet's resources
- Mass food production has not reduced the number of starving people, but has contributed to climate change
- Intensive deforestation, significant changes in land use, and loss of biodiversity
- Global food production uses 25% of the total habitable land, consumes 70% of drinking water reserves, leads to 80% deforestation, and causes 30% of greenhouse gas emissions
- Ultimately, 30% of food produced, distributed, and sold ends up in the trash
-
Social:
- The system produces more than enough to feed everyone on the planet, but since it is profit-oriented, what we produce is not distributed fairly
-
Political:
- While millions are starving, world governments under the guise of 'budget cuts' reduce spending on social programs
- Simultaneously allocating millions in subsidies to big corporations and military budgets
Event Goal
The goal of this event is to address the issue of food waste and to encourage a larger number of people to rethink how we treat food in today's consumerist society, its production, distribution, and consumption. This awareness can lead to individual and collective decisions on what we can do to reduce food waste and loss
Project
The event is part of the STORY project co-financed by the European Union.
