Description

What's Happening in Belgrade?

On February 11th and 12th, DKSG invites you to curated programs dedicated to Japanese experimental short films from the 1960s to 1990s.🍿🎥🇯🇵

The first day will feature works by several generations of Japanese experimental filmmakers from the 1960s to 1980s. All films will be shown from original 16mm film prints, allowing viewers to appreciate the texture of the images and the characteristic perception of films from that era.
In the 1960s, American underground cinema, actively represented in Japan, had a significant influence on the development of independent Japanese cinema and the emergence of a new generation of experimental directors. Platforms for film screenings were established during that period, including Image Forum, which became spaces for the exchange of ideas and artistic interaction.
In the 1970s and 80s, a distinct language of experimental cinema emerged in Japan, linked to a structuralist approach. Filmmakers explored film mechanics, film texture, and principles of cinematic perception. It was an exceptional period for experimental cinema in Japan, focused on artists who kept film diaries and created short animated films.

The second day will feature works by female directors from the 1990s, addressing themes of the body, sexuality, and gender norms. This program will showcase works by women artists who have garnered special attention for their personal narratives in documentary cinema.

The programs will be presented by Ko Yamasita, director and curator of Image Forum in Tokyo, a jury member of international film festivals, and an advisor to the Asian Cultural Center in Gwangju.
