About the film

Sound recordist Jack wanders at night with a microphone through the outskirts of Philadelphia — he needs new noises for a cheap horror film. An owl's hoot, the wind, a passing car, a sudden tire pop — and then a passing car skids off the road into the water. Jack manages to save the passenger, and later, while listening back to the recording, notices something strange: it seems that just before the tire burst, a gunshot can be heard.

Thus begins one of the finest paranoid thrillers of American cinema. "Blow Out" was directed by Brian De Palma, starring John Travolta, Nancy Allen and John Lithgow, with cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond.
At the final summer screening we'll talk about De Palma, American political paranoia after Watergate, 1970s cinema, and why "Blow Out" simultaneously draws from Blow-Up by Antonioni and The Conversation by Coppola.
