🎬 Film Club with Егором Сенниковым: watching and discussing the film "The Holy Mountain"

In the desert a man who resembles Christ wakes up. He doesn’t remember who he is or where he came from, but quite quickly he ends up in a city where his body is turned into a religious commodity: molds are taken, crucifixes are made, the relic is sold to tourists. Then he decides to set off for the Holy Mountain, where immortal sages supposedly live.

"The Holy Mountain" is one of the most famous cult films of the 1970s and, possibly, Jodorowsky’s main film: crazy, funny, solemn, obscene, beautiful, sometimes irritating, almost always dazzling. Here you can look for Tarot symbolism, alchemy, Zen, Christian symbols, surrealism, political satire, the theatre of cruelty and psychedelic culture. Or you can look for nothing and simply enjoy the flight of imagination.

"The Holy Mountain" is not an esoteric trip about seeking enlightenment. It is a cruel and very funny satire on a world where everything is turned into a commodity: faith, the body, art, revolution, children, war, sexuality, death, spiritual seeking and even the desire to run away from it all.

Today "The Holy Mountain" reads less as the museum psychedelia of the 1970s and more like a mad commercial for the present, filmed long before spiritual practices became an industry, politics became performance, protest became style, and the search for the self became a market of endless services.

Astonishingly funny, incredibly ornate film-experience that needs to be lived through. It will be funny, strange, beautiful, at times completely indecent and almost certainly a little awkward.
