🎬 Film club with Egor Sennikov: screening and discussion of the film 'Graduation' (Romania, 2016)

Doctor Romeo has spent his life preparing his daughter to finish school well, go to study in England and start a life where rules apply and life seems completely different — fair. Only one final exam stands between them and that future — but then an accident happens, threatening the whole carefully built plan. Romeo decides to help fate a little: he makes one phone call. Thus begins one of the most tense moral thrillers of the 21st century.

Cristian Mungiu makes deep, reflective films that are impossible to look away from. Ordinary life in his films turns into an obstacle course and a web of moral choices that are as gripping as any detective plot. For 'Graduation' Mungiu won the directing prize at Cannes, and he is overall a two-time Palme d'Or winner — for '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' and the recent 'Fjord'.

After the screening we'll talk not only about Mungiu but about Romanian cinema in general — one of the best and most necessary film cultures in the world today. Puiu, Porumboiu, Jude and Mungiu know how to do something that is especially hard now: look closely at the present and understand how it is put together — and why so many of us feel nauseated by it. 'Graduation' is a film after which you don't want to pass judgment on the characters, but seriously discuss how we ourselves would have acted in their place.
