Every summer checklist should include one must-do item — watching a film under the open sky.

"The Great Beauty" — exactly the kind of film you want to watch under the stars. Rome, ancient palaces, terraces, night parties, bohemians, aristocrats, artists, journalists and an endless parade of beautiful, vibrant and slightly hollow life.

At the center is Jep Gambardella, a writer and chronicler of Rome's high society, who observes this world with irony, weariness and an increasingly clear sense of inner emptiness. Behind the city's dazzling beauty the question gradually emerges: what remains when success, pleasures and recognition stop bringing joy?
