Description

MEMORY OF SERBIA'S LANDSCAPES: HOW THE CLIMATE OF THE PAST SHAPED OUR PLANET

It's hard to imagine, but millions of years ago the area of present-day Serbia was covered by a sea. Creatures lived here that today can only be seen as fossils, and the climate and landscapes of the Balkans were completely different from what they are now.

But how do scientists learn about climates that no one has ever witnessed? And what can the very ground beneath our feet tell us about the past?

In this lecture we'll trace how the territory of present-day Serbia changed over millions of years, discuss vanished seas and the traces of ancient climates that can still be found across the country.

We'll cover

  • how past climates are reconstructed from rocks, fossils and pollen of ancient plants;
  • where in Serbia traces of ancient seas can be found;
  • whether mammoths ever lived here and what they can tell us about the climate;
  • why the Earth sometimes almost completely froze and at other times became significantly warmer than today;
  • whether the sea could ever return to places where it is no longer present.

And most importantly — why a climate history going back millions of years helps us better understand today's climate and possible futures for our planet.

Anna Romashina — geographer, a graduate of Moscow State University and National Film and Television School UK. She organizes international school olympiads and develops advanced-level problems, and also scouts landscapes for film and TV shoots.
