The Last Songs: Music in Serbia during the Breakup of Yugoslavia

UK Parobrod, Belgrade
19 May 2026, Tuesday
9:00 – 21:00
Serbian

Description

On May 15 at Parobrod the exhibition "The Last Songs: Music in Serbia during the Breakup of Yugoslavia" by authors Laura Emery and Ivana Miladinović Prica will open. 🎶

  • The exhibition will present archival research, photographs, little-known documents and oral histories that tell the story of academic music in Serbia during the breakup of Yugoslavia.
  • The focus is on the years preceding 1991, when the start of the Yugoslav wars abruptly cut short the country's cultural life.
  • The authors trace the flowering of the postwar musical avant-garde, the role of Yugoslav cultural figures in international exchange and their sudden disappearance with the state's dissolution.
  • A separate section is devoted to artists who, even amid war and chaos, continued to work, using music as a form of resistance.
  • The exhibition runs until May 30. 🖼
