And soon reading that old story will become tiresome. And I think: Russian people will go south, to the sea and the sun. It is, after all, a mistake. They have been moving for many centuries. In the indestructible yearning for the steppe, perhaps "for the cross at St. Sophia's," the most important paths of Russia are hidden. There is a need to refresh the blood. It becomes stifling. The literary messiah, awaited by the world for so long and so vainly, will come from there, from 13 sunny steppes surrounded by the sea. 1916.
