The Path to the Top of Ballet: How Sofia Matyushenskaya Conquered World Stages

Classical ballet is often called an art form with no room for compromise. Talent alone isn't enough to become a world-class prima ballerina - it takes phenomenal discipline, character, and passion. Sofia Matyushenskaya has all of this in abundance: a ballerina whose name is now well known to dance connoisseurs from St. Petersburg to Milan.

As early as August 8, residents and guests of Tivat, Montenegro, will have a rare chance to see her perform live at the Evening of Russian Ballet. Here's why this artist is worth getting to know before the lights go down in the hall.

From First Steps to European Recognition

Sofia was born in Chisinau in 1996. Her professional path began at the Moldovan National Choreographic College, from which she graduated successfully in 2015. However, the future star did not limit herself to a single school: her potential was noticed in Europe, and Sofia trained at the prestigious AUB Dance Academy in Milan, Italy.

Recognition from critics and the professional community was not long in coming. While still a student, Sofia began collecting awards at prestigious international competitions:

  • First Prize at the VIII International A. S. Lifar Ballet Competition.
  • Winner of the IV International Istanbul Ballet Competition in Turkey.

The Main Stage and a "Golden Mask" Nomination

A key milestone in the ballerina's career was her collaboration with the renowned Leonid Yakobson St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theatre. Joining in 2015, Sofia rose to the status of leading soloist in just one year.

It was there that her virtuoso performance of the role of Kitri in "Don Quixote" (staged by Johan Kobborg) earned her a nomination for Russia's top theatre award, the "Golden Mask," in the Best Female Role category. Sofia was applauded by audiences at Russia's leading theatres: her solo parts captivated audiences on the stages of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, and the Stanislavsky Music Theatre.

Absolute Versatility

Sofia Matyushenskaya's repertoire is impressive in its scope. She performs strict classical works and bold contemporary pieces with equal brilliance:

  • Classical masterpieces: Odette/Odile in "Swan Lake," Princess Aurora in "The Sleeping Beauty," Masha in "The Nutcracker," and the tragic "Giselle."
  • Contemporary choreography: striking work in productions by Vladimir Varnava ("Stone Shore") and Douglas Lee ("Firebird").

A New Chapter: Belgrade

In 2022, Sofia Matyushenskaya took on a new creative challenge, becoming a leading soloist of the National Theatre in Belgrade. Serbian audiences instantly fell in love with the artist for her refined technique, dramatic depth, and incredible energy. Alongside her performing career, Sofia also completed a higher education in pedagogy, which helps her gain a deeper understanding of the anatomy and philosophy of dance.

Where and When to Watch

Seeing a prima ballerina who has conquered the stages of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres perform in Montenegro is not an everyday event.
