Description
Film Club with Egor Sennikov: screening and discussion of the film Method of Exclusion / No Other Choice (Park Chan-wook, South Korea, 2025)
About the film
Man-su worked for twenty-five years at a paper mill and finally seems to have everything a respectable middle-class person is supposed to have: a loving family, a nice house, two dogs, and the confidence that tomorrow will be much like today. Then he gets fired. Thus begins his journey into strange spaces where violence becomes the response to capitalist pressures.
Park Chan-wook's new film, from the director of Oldboy, The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave, is one of those cases where major auteur cinema is made by the rules of genre filmmaking. Park turns a story about unemployment into a dark comedy and a thriller: the film is full of murders, farce, anxiety, and irony. At the center is a man who sinks ever deeper into a mad logic that, to him, seems rational.
After the screening we will talk about how Park Chan-wook is able to turn the most familiar fears of the modern person into a mad attraction and how this connects in his work to political and social themes.
