shell(f) book club meeting in-person in Belgrade!

At the meeting we'll talk about a book in which a single Minsk house becomes an entry point into a conversation about memory, neighborhood, fear, the city, and everyday life in Belarus. We'll discuss how a text about collective memory — fragile, discontinuous, and full of gaps — is constructed from courtyard rumors, household details, other people's voices, and fragments of stories.

We'll also look at how mysticism, humor, and anxiety are combined in the book, why Toni Lashden chooses not straightforward realism but a slightly shifted perspective, and how a larger history emerges here through the particular and the everyday.

Toni Lashden is a Belarusian writer and activist, founder of the feminist writing lab 'Rastyazhenie'. She is the author of the short story collections Chorny Les (Papier-mâché, 2023 and Miane Nyama, 2024) and The Last Bus Leaves at Eight (Galiafy, 2021).
