Description

Exhibition of Drawings by Eufrosinia Kersnovskaya

From October 30 an exhibition of drawings by Eufrosinia Kersnovskaya — a former GULAG prisoner — opens in the Auditorium. A Bessarabian landowner, Kersnovskaya lost her home after the region was annexed by the USSR and in 1941 was subjected to repression and deported to Siberia. A year later she attempted to escape, was sentenced to death, but the death sentence was ultimately commuted to ten years in a corrective labor camp.

After her release, though never officially rehabilitated, Kersnovskaya created the handwritten book How Much Is a Person Worth and illustrated it with more than 700 drawings. It is a firsthand testimony of survival in the camps, combining documentary accuracy with the striking power of personal witness. Work on the text and illustrations began in 1964 and continued into the early 1970s. Fearing seizure of the manuscript and re-arrest, Kersnovskaya made several copies. In the 1980s the memoirs circulated in samizdat, and in 1990 the drawings were published in the magazine Ogonyok.
