Monodrama “Mokranjac – Ja ću tebi ljuba biti” (a production of the Muzej Krajine from Negotin)

Marking 170 years since the birth of Stevan St. Mokranjac, the Muzej Krajine presents a monodrama dedicated to the life and work of the renowned composer.

The Museum Theatre of the Muzej Krajine was established in 2022 as part of the Museum’s effort to use contemporary museological and educational approaches to bring significant figures and themes from national cultural history closer to the public. The monodrama’s text was written with the aim of using the museum-theatre form to revive the character and era of one of the most important Serbian composers.

A special contribution to the production’s artistic impact comes from actress Ljiljana Jakšić, who movingly and intuitively brings to life the character of Marija – Mica Mokranjac, the composer’s wife. Through her confession, the audience gets the chance to see Mokranjac from a different, more intimate angle, viewing his life and work through the memories, emotions, and family story of the person closest to him throughout his life.

The play shines a light, in a distinct and emotional way, on lesser-known segments of Mokranjac’s life, weaving together documentary material, historical facts, and dramatic expression into a singular museum interpretation. Blending cultural history, musical heritage, and stage storytelling, it offers the audience a fresh way to experience the figure and oeuvre of a composer whose name holds a special place in Serbian culture.

Author of the monodrama text: Sanja Radosavljević, curator-educator at the Muzej Krajine
