What's happening in Belgrade?

On February 11th and 12th, DKSG invites you to curator programs dedicated to Japanese experimental short films from the 1960s-1990s.🍿🎥🇯🇵

The first day will feature works by several generations of Japanese experimental filmmakers from the 1960s-1980s. All films will be shown from original 16mm film prints, allowing viewers to appreciate the texture of the image and the characteristic perception of films from that period.
In the 1960s, American underground cinema, actively presented in Japan, had a significant influence on the development of independent Japanese cinema and the emergence of a new generation of experimental directors. Platforms for film screenings were created during that period, including Image Forum, becoming spaces for the exchange of ideas and artistic interaction.
In the 1970s-80s, a distinct language of experimental cinema emerged in Japan, linked to a structuralist approach. Filmmakers explored film mechanics, film texture, and the principles of cinematic perception. It was an exceptional period for experimental cinema in Japan, focused on artists who kept film diaries and created short animated films.

The second day will feature works by women directors from the 1990s, dedicated to themes of the body, sexuality, and gender norms. This program will showcase works by women artists who have attracted special attention with their personal narratives in documentary film.

The programs will be presented by Koyo Yamashita, director and curator of Image Forum in Tokyo, a jury member of international film festivals, and advisor to the Asian Cultural Center in Kwangju.
