Description

How to recognize a witch, why would she want someone else’s heart, why was she feared but sometimes people still tried to make deals with her? And when was the last time women accused of witchcraft were burned in Serbia?

Witches in the Balkans

Witches in the Balkans are not just fairy tales and folk beliefs, but also very real stories of persecution, torture, and murder. From medieval notions of female beauty and sexuality to criminal codes banning witch-hunts, and the story of the famous poisoner Granny Anuyka.

At the lecture

In this lecture we will look at how ideas about witches were born, what people feared in them, and how fear of difference and the supernatural turned into a tool of violence against women.
