Film Club with Egor Sennikov: A Touch of Sin (2013)

"A Touch of Sin" by Jia Zhangke — blood, rage and the underside of China's economic miracle

About the film

Miners, corrupt officials, prostitutes, millionaires, migrant workers, luxury cars, cheap hotels, guns and knives. China is rapidly getting rich, cities are growing, money flows like a river, and along with it hatred, despair and a desire for revenge accumulate.

In 2013 one of the leading contemporary Chinese directors, Jia Zhangke, took four real criminal stories that shocked the country and turned them into a furious mix of a western, social drama and traditional Chinese martial arts cinema. Here the humiliated take up arms, violence becomes the final argument, and behind the facade of prosperity there lives a society ready to explode at any moment.
