Description
June 27 — in-person book club meeting at the bookstore lav i žabac
We will talk about the book by Srdjan Valarevic, "Komo", together with its translator Aleksey Kurilov
"I opened 'Komo' with no expectations — and suddenly realized it was written in my language. I dissolved into the text," — Aleksey, having moved to Serbia, began learning the language almost from scratch — and a few years later took on the translation of the cult Serbian novel which, he says, proved surprisingly close to Russian readers.
"Komo" is a novel in which almost nothing happens — and yet everything happens. Beneath simple conversations, walks, wine, a lake and chance encounters, the breakup of Yugoslavia, emigration, loneliness and the feeling of a person trying to put themselves back together after the catastrophe of the 1990s gradually emerge.
At the meeting we will discuss what in the novel feels resonant and what surprises, what reminds us of ourselves, and what reveals Serbia and Serbian literature to us in a new light.
