Language Is a City: How Not to Get Lost in Language Learning

Do you need to learn a language first in order to start speaking it? Why do we often set overly abstract goals, become disappointed with our progress, and think we're learning "wrong"? It's impossible to learn a language entirely — just as it's impossible to know every street in a huge city. In this lecture we'll look at how to set a concrete goal, choose a learning format, and build your route.

The lecture consists of three parts: theoretical, practical, and discussion.

We'll cover in detail:

• modern teaching methods and how to choose the one that suits you
• how to define your language-learning goal and why it matters
• practical tips on how to learn a language based on what you need to improve
• common stereotypes about language learning (and what's true)
• your problems and questions about learning a language
