Description
«The Dogkeeper». A musical parable based on a novella by Stefan Zweig
Premiere announcement
On October 6, the Free Theatre Workshop from Jerusalem will present the premiere in Belgrade of the musical parable “The Dogkeeper,” created based on Stefan Zweig’s novella “The Eyes of the Eternal Brother.”
Artistic cast
On stage: performer Mark Atlasov and 29 musical instruments—from ancient and ethnic to contemporary. morin khuur, kalimba, Tibetan singing bowls, hang and rav, drums, flutes, metallophones and other instruments become the voices of the characters, states and destinies.
Philosophy of the production
Here music does not simply illustrate what is happening or accompany the story; it rather becomes a full-fledged character. It thinks, argues, disturbs and comforts together with the protagonists.
Plot and concept
At the center of the piece is the story of a man who follows an unusual path—from a national hero and victor to the supreme judge, a hermit, and finally a simple dogkeeper. But this is not merely a dramatic tale about one person’s fate—it's a meditation on freedom, power, choice and the attempt to find oneself beyond others’ expectations. The hero’s journey is lived through sound, rhythm, word and silence. Through the vibration of the drum, the breath of the flute, the sound of the horn, the ring of metal and the voice of the human body.
Audience experience
The combination of dramatic theatre and virtuoso command of dozens of instruments creates an experience that is hard to call merely a play. “The Dogkeeper” is for those who love theatre that not only entertains but also reveals something new.
