The Doll from Bed No. 21

The Doll from Bed No. 21

More than ten years have passed since I first read this play. The feeling of dread I had after reading it has not left me even today.

Đorđe Lebović, with a masterful hand, gave his characters such power that before your eyes they tear apart, transform, and manipulatively and flawlessly pervert obvious truth into its opposite, so that you can only freeze with fear when you realize how easily that is possible.

In 2016 the Oxford Dictionary chose the word "post-truth" as Word of the Year. The definition says that the word reflects a state in which facts are less important than personal belief about what is true, thereby opening the door to manipulation of every kind. The great writer Đorđe Lebović knew this long before; in this text written more than fifty years ago, he prophetically warned us about it.

We dedicate this performance to all those victims of sexual violence who have summoned the courage to come forward and publicly point the finger directly at the face of evil, and to those who still remain silent, because this play depicts the full hell that a victim goes through when they decide to speak.
